We've done it! Our first session in our new home in Cairo, Egypt. I am thrilled to be able to continue to do this rewarding work. In this combo-session, we spent the first half doing a traditional senior portrait session and the second half shooting a family session.

Regarding the senior session, I cannot say enough about Maya's overall amazingness. Apart from being a natural in front of the camera, Maya emanated confidence and poise and absolutely KILLED IT. It was a pleasure to photograph her.

Later, her family joined in (after a drink at the homemade backyard bar) for some photographs all together. No one could be sure of the last time they had all been professionally photographed, but all agreed that it had been a while.

To sum up: glowy evening light, gorgeous backyard setting, and a wonderful family.

If you needed to borrow a 1 lb geode, a floral scarf from 1959, thirty-six playfully mismatched plates, or an impressive collection of glitter, who would you turn to?

I turn to my friend Marsha. She has so much more style than I will ever possess, and possesses the most kind and generous spirit of anyone I know. She was also able to throw together the most amazing boho-backyard tableau imaginable for her daughter’s backyard session.

In moments, we erected a teepee wrapped in found fabric scraps and dreamcatchers, and laid out faux fur rugs and overstuffed pillows. The eye-popping color contrasted the cloudy twilight in a way that I could never have planned. Confession: I just tend not to have ideas like, “Wait… do we need some purple face paint?”

Thank goodness for Marsha.

For her part, Olive was a terrific model and a very patient soul. It also helped that she is a talented, beautiful, and stylish little girl in her own right. She loved being able to play with toys, write in her journal, jump on the trampoline, and sing and play the ukulele while I snapped away. Even the dogs seemed to know that something exciting was happening in the backyard, and they joined in for some of the fun.
